Last Sunday the Russian school
celebrated the end of term with a New Year show. The children performed "The
election of Tsar Michael the first" to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty of
Russia. The quiz on Russian history for parents and guests, traditional Russian
dances and poetry recitals followed, culminating in polonaise of
Pushkin's St-Petersburg. The competitions and races inspired by the upcoming
Winter Olympic Games that are due to be held in Sochi, Russia in 2014 were very
popular. The atmosphere was very warm with the Samovar tea party and delicious
babushka's cheese cakes "vatrushkas". No Russian New Year event is
complete without Santa, Ded Moroz( Grand-Father Frost), as he is called in
Russia and Snegurochka, the Snowmaiden. These fairy-tale creatures appeared at
the end of the show with a large sack full of presents.
